Sumac you say?  Yes, there is poisonous sumac, however if you just look at the berry color, white is poisonous and red is good to use. Two types of edible sumac grow here in Oklahoma.  Both types can be used in the same way.  A tea made from the berries is called Indian tea.  It tastes much like lemonade.


The Omahas boiled the smooth upland sumac fruits and applied the liquid as an external wash to stop bleeding. The Iowa use the berry tea for a liver cleanse.
